Loom of Heaven
Heaven’s way is high and vast, yet its threads bind all below.
The sun and moon revolve, never ceasing, never failing.
How can one doubt the order, when all things follow their course?
하늘 이치 높고 넓어 그 그물 성기지 않으니
해와 달이 돌고 돌아 잠시도 쉬지 않네
만물이 제 길 가거늘 그 이치를 어찌 의심하리
Sunrise Over the Hills
The morning sun shines clear and bright, its light opens the valley flowers.
Shadows flee, dew dries, and all the world stirs anew.
Who could see this and not feel joy —the universe, endlessly reborn each dawn.
동산에 해 뜨니 골짜기 꽃이 피고
그늘은 걷히고 이슬은 스스로 마르네
이 광경 보고도 어찌 기쁨을 모르리
Stars & Longing
The bright moon fills the empty sky, countless stars surround it.
Even among those thousands, my heart longs for but one.
So many lights before me, yet my desire is fixed.
청산리 벽계수야 수이 감을 자랑 마라
일도창해하면 다시 오기 어려워라
명월이 만공산하니 쉬어간들 어떠리

Jade Green Stream, don’t boast so proud of your easy passing through these blue hills
Once you have reached the broad sea, to return again will be hard,
While the Bright Moon fills these empty hills, why not pause? Then go on, if you will.
청산리 벽계수야 수이감을 자랑마라
일도 창해하면 다시오기 어려오니
명월이 만공산하니 쉬여간들 엇더리
A Monk Passes By
A shadow strikes the water below: a monk passes by on the bridge,
“Stay awhile, reverend sir, let me ask you where you go.”
He just points his staff at the white clouds and keeps on his way without turning.
물 아래 그림자 지니 다리 위에 중이 간다
저 중아 게 있거라 너 가는 데 물어보자
막대로 흰 구름 가리키며 돌아 아니 보고 가노메라
Nature’s Histrionics (hybrid collection)
On the dew-laden grass, sunlight glitters like gold,
Every tiny creature awakens and sings.
Birds chirp and dart across the garden,
Everything pulses with life in wind and sun.
이슬 맺힌 풀 위에 햇살이 금빛으로 빛나니
작은 생명들도 모두 깨어 노래하네
정원 안의 새들 지저귀며 날아다니니
바람과 햇살 속에서 모든 것이 생동하네
The moonlight spilling over the garden wall is gentle,
One or two paulownia flowers silently fall.
I hesitate to leave,
Then turn back to look again.
담머리 넘어드는 달빛은 은은하고
한두 개 소리 없이 내려지는 오동꽃을
가려다 발을 멈추고 다시 돌아보노라
As I breathe on the glass to clear it,
A bird flies by, wiping the sky clean.
Tomorrow, the magnolia comes, brushing clouds with light.
내가 입김을 불어 유리창을 닦아내면
새 한 마리 날아가며 하늘을 닦아낸다
내일은 목련꽃 찾아와 구름 빛도 닦으리
Plum blossoms, plum blossoms, dance in the spring breeze,
Petals scatter (x2 ??), singing the birds' songs.
매화야, 매화야, 봄바람에 춤추어라
꽃잎이 흩날리며 새들의 노래를 부르네
Oh moon, now
As you go to the west tonight,
Go before the Buddha of Infinite Life,
And tell him my prayer.
달이여 이제
서방 넘어 가시려는고
무량수불전 앞에 가서
사뢰옵소서
All things move alive, like the flowing river,
Birds’ songs, the wind’s dance, sunlight’s laughter —
Spring, shine forever bright!
강물 흐르듯 모든 것이 살아 움직이니
새들의 노래, 바람의 춤, 햇살의 웃음
봄이여, 영원히 반짝이라!
Celestial Storm
Winds rise across the wide sea, dark clouds cover the sky.
The fisherman’s song grows faint, his boat tossed upon the waves.
Yet above the storm, the stars remain clear and bright.
넓은 바다 바람 일어 검은 구름 하늘 덮고
어부의 노래 멀어지고 작은 배는 물결 타네
거센 풍랑 지나 위엔 별빛만 더욱 밝도다
Moon on Quiet Water
The quiet lake receives the moon, a silver path unfolding.
Clouds drift slowly over it, scattering shadows in the glow.
If I step across the water, would my foot disturb the stars?
고요한 호수 위에 달빛 길이 열리고
구름 흘러 그림자도 은빛 속에 스며드네
내가 물 위에 서면 별빛도 함께 흔들리랴
Spring Comes
Spring returns to the world once more; the frost melts, the earth breathes again.
Birds sing as the willows bud —
Heaven and earth, in harmony, awaken together from winter’s dream.
봄이 다시 돌아와 서리 녹고 땅이 숨 쉬니
버들가지 새잎 돋고 새 노래 들려오네
하늘과 땅 한 기운에 겨울 꿈서 함께 깨네

The sun rises again to warm the earth below.
All life rejoices in light, and my heart is glad.
구름 안개 산을 덮어 봉우리 가리워도
해는 다시 떠올라 온 누리를 따뜻하게 하네
만물이 빛을 기뻐하니 이 마음 또한 즐겁도다

Birds call, the river sings, and I rejoice with them.
Even my shadow dances in the light—my spirit soars.
아침 해 높이 떠서 온 산하가 깨어나니
새 소리 강물 소리 서로 어울려 들리네
내 그림자 빛에 춤추니 마음 또한 날아오른다
Climbing the mountain,
Listening to the flowing water,
My heart becomes peaceful.
산에 올라가서
물 흐르는 소리를 듣고
그 소리에 마음이 평화로워지네
