Vision
Enriching lives through dynamic symphonic music.
Mission Statement
The mission of COSA is to promote the growth and development of the
Central Oregon Symphony through education, fundraising, marketing and public relations.
The Central Oregon Symphony is unique – its musicians are not paid - they devote countless volunteer hours to the task of creating a magical, full season of classical concerts for all members of our community to enjoy. This combined with unique partnerships in the community and our generous donor base; we are able to provide unreserved tickets at no cost, making this substantial art form available to everybody in the community. From modest beginnings in 1967, the orchestra has grown to become a major player in the local fine arts scene. Last year, over 8,000 individuals, children and families enjoyed symphony concerts.
Our Conductor
One would have to search the orchestras of the world, large and small, elite and amateur, to find a conductor who is more respected and beloved by audiences and musicians alike as our own maestro, Michael Gesme. Michael is in his fifteenth season as Conductor of the Central Oregon Symphony and Professor of Music at Central Oregon Community College where he teaches courses in Music Theory, Music History and Conducting. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where he founded the Luther College Chamber Orchestra, and a Masters of Music Degree in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Our Musicians
Central Oregon Symphony musicians come to us from varied backgrounds and locations. Many have mastered their instruments at nationally prestigious music schools such as Eastman School of Music, Manhattan School of Music, and Cleveland Institute of Music; many other have honed their skills through our thriving local music programs and regional universities. Some musicians have joined COS after having retired from renowned professional orchestras, many others are currently active music teachers and performers. Our diverse musicians share a common passion for the performing arts and make the COS strong and unique.
Central Oregon Symphony Association
COSA, Inc. is a non-profit organization that provides logistical and financial support to the Central Oregon Symphony. The COSA board of directors is composed of music lovers who meet monthly with the conductor and executive director to plan activities that include fundraising, communication with the community, ticket distribution, production of brochures and programs, ushering, and much more.
